Music to Our Ears: How Baltimore’s Cultural Leaders Orchestrated America’s 250th Anniversary

As the United States approached its 250th anniversary, Baltimore tuned up a celebration rooted in history, creativity, and civic pride. With the support of the Baltimore Community Foundation’s (BCF) Legacy Forward grant program, organizations across the region invested in projects that honored the nation’s founding while looking boldly toward its future. Among them, three grantees—the Bach in Baltimore Concert Series, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and the Towson University Foundation—struck a resonant chord, using music and education to shape a commemorative experience.

Bach in Baltimore Concert Series

The Bach in Baltimore Concert Series brought a deeply personal and historic voice to the celebration. Known for its commitment to historically informed performances, and its devotion to performing the complete works of composer and musician, Johann Sebastian Bach, the organization branched out for the semiquincentennial by exploring how music of the eighteenth century—especially works that would have been familiar in the era of the American Revolution—could help audiences better understand the cultural landscape of the nation’s founding. They performed two free public concerts over the July 4th weekend that included a live chamber choir. Each concert in their 2026 season will open with a song or composition that celebrates the USA.

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) marked the nation’s 250th anniversary with a signature event designed to blend tradition, spectacle, and widely beloved repertoire. Its’ Star-Spangled 250! concert, held at Oregon Ridge Park on July 3rd, brought audiences together for an immersive patriotic celebration featuring music of many eras (including the present) led by Music Director Jonathon Heyward. The evening culminated with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, synchronized with a large-scale fireworks display, creating a multisensory tribute to the nation’s past and present. Through this programming, the BSO not only honored America’s 250th milestone but also reaffirmed music’s power to bring communities together in shared celebration, blending reflection, festivity, and a distinctly Baltimore tradition.

Towson University

Meanwhile, the Towson University Foundation is cultivating the next generation of artists, educators, and cultural leaders who will carry this legacy forward. By supporting student-driven initiatives, academic programming, and community partnerships, Towson is embedding the anniversary into a broader educational framework. The theme of their Summer at the Center Arts Festival (June 11 – July 11, 2026) is America 250: Voices of a Nation. The festival includes performance, film, visual art and community engagement.

Each of these grantees contributes a distinct yet complementary note to Baltimore’s semiquincentennial celebration. From the historically grounded performances of Bach in Baltimore, to the expansive and inclusive programming of the BSO, to the forward-looking educational work at Towson University, their efforts embody the spirit of Legacy Forward—honoring the past while investing in what comes next.

If you missed these celebrations, you can still experience the programs and events of many Legacy Forward grantees in the coming months. Visit www.bcf.org/legacyforward to learn more.

Building Stronger Neighborhoods Regionwide

We have a nearly 30-year history of offering grants to resident-led groups and community projects in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. These grants give residents the resources they need to accomplish a small project, get more people involved, and encourage the next generation of neighborhood leaders. We also fund programs that support the development of leaders of all ages who are working to improve their neighborhoods and schools. Our support is intended to help identify, activate, inform and network leaders. And finally, we believe when schools and neighborhoods team up to improve their school and community, meaningful and lasting change can be made. We are interested in funding proposals in which the students and adults in schools collaborate intentionally with community residents, neighborhood associations, and other individuals, groups, and institutions in the area surrounding a school.

School Leadership

We believe that attracting and retaining effective and diverse school leaders is a key lever for change in Baltimore’s educational landscape, and so we fund school leadership development efforts at the district and individual school level. We are interested in funding proposals that focus on principal coaching, mentoring, peer networking, wellness/self-care, as well as pipelines that identify and develop new leaders. We will also continue to support efforts that build a culture of appreciation and encouragement for school leaders.

Place-based Grantmaking in Selected School Communities

We have allocated funds for two geographical areas that bookend a crucial corridor on the Westside of Baltimore City: Howard Park /Forest Park area (served by Calvin Rodwell Elementary Middle School and Liberty Elementary), and Reservoir Hill/Penn North area (served by Dorothy I Height Elementary). In these three schools and their surrounding neighborhoods, we will support projects and activities designed to make the communities safe, clean, green and vibrant; and improve the quality of the schools. Some projects may be neighborhood-focused, some school-focused and others collaborative projects between the schools and their respective communities.

Early Learning & Judy Centers

High quality early childhood education has a lifelong effect on students. Through our Early Learning grant program, we are interested in system-wide early childhood education proposals that will help Baltimore City and County’s youngest learners, and their families, get the start they need. Nonprofit organizations that offer programs and/or services to Judy Centers are encouraged to contact the centers directly to explore partnership opportunities.
