For half a century, the Baltimore Community Foundation has been bringing together people who are passionate about Baltimore and purposeful in their philanthropy.

Join us in celebrating the impact we have made over the past 50 years together and envisioning what is still to come.

Our History

The first community foundation was developed more than 100 years ago in Cleveland. Fifty years later, the concept came to Baltimore.

“Baltimore needs a philanthropic organization that is a gathering place for all people,” said our co-founder Robert Levi, vice president of Mercantile Bank & Trust (now PNC Bank). With no color lines, no religious affiliation and no special cause, such an organization could have a bird’s eye view of the things that would make Baltimore a better place and the ability to gather the resources to make those happen.

With support from fellow community leaders and the region’s leading financial institutions, the Baltimore Community Foundation was born.

Thank You For Your BCF Story Submission!

From the beginning, the Baltimore Community Foundation recognized the importance of healthy, vibrant neighborhoods. Some of our earliest grants supported Neighborhood Housing Services and Baltimore City Fair. In the half-century since, we’ve awarded millions of dollars for cleaning and greening projects, block captain programs, concert series, festivals, youth programs and more.

These activities have made neighborhoods more vibrant and livable, but there is more to do. The legacy of structural racism, including decades of disinvestment, persists. Much more is needed and possible, which is why we are also launching a 50th Anniversary Neighborhood Grants Fund to enhance neighborhood-based grantmaking in 2022 in celebration of our anniversary, while sustaining—and further increasing—investments in the long term. We’re thrilled to announce that the first $100,000 in gifts to the 50th Anniversary Fund for Neighborhoods will be matched with lead gifts from the Bozzuto Family Charitable Fund, Dorothy and Paul Wolman, and the Jean and Sidney Silber Family Fund.

At BCF, we recognize the power of community members when they come together to dream, bringing visions of a better future to life, in ways both large and small. We hope you will join us in recognizing what has been accomplished and what is possible—when we do it together.

None of the programs and projects BCF funds could be successful without dedicated residents leading the way, so we launched the Neighborhood Spotlight Awards to honor the unsung heroes working every day to improve the lives of their neighbors in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. They serve as block captains; as unofficial coordinators of community clean-ups, concerts, festivals, and cook-outs; as artists bringing beauty to gateways; and as tireless advocates for the resources their communities need to thrive.

Over the summer of 2022, residents of Baltimore City and County had the opportunity to nominate their neighbors taking the initiative to build a better Baltimore. Our very first Neighborhood Spotlight Award winners will be announced in September, and recognized with grant awards to the nonprofits of their choice at an event on October 19, 2022 celebrating their inspiring efforts.

While nominations for 2022 have closed, check back here for announcements regarding the 2022 Neighborhood Spotlight Award winners, and a schedule for the call for nominations in 2023.

A New Look

A New Space

In spring 2020, BCF moved into its first street level headquarters on Mt. Royal Avenue in the vibrant Mid-Town Belvedere neighborhood. Set amidst the University of Baltimore, Maryland Institute College of Art, Station North Arts District and The Associated, this new location is perfect for convening diverse donors, community partners and public officials determined to build a better Baltimore. We’ve filled the space with bright colors and inspiring images that reflect our core values – trustworthy, inclusive and entrepreneurial.

While the pandemic delayed in-person gatherings for a time, we’re now welcoming partners meetings and events in multi-use spaces. Even more exciting, we’ve unveiled the Baltimore Community Foundation Gallery and a thought-provoking inaugural exhibition titled Community. The show includes work from nine local artists who have Baker Artist Portfolios – a program that supports and promotes Baltimore-based artists and is funded by the William G. Baker Fund at the Baltimore Community Foundation. Together, the pieces in Community explore the vital role that diverse contributions, relationships, and connections play in creating far-reaching change and impact.

We are planning a series of receptions for the exhibition throughout the year and look forward to providing more details soon.

Building Stronger Neighborhoods Regionwide

We have a nearly 30-year history of offering grants to resident-led groups and community projects in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. These grants give residents the resources they need to accomplish a small project, get more people involved, and encourage the next generation of neighborhood leaders. We also fund programs that support the development of leaders of all ages who are working to improve their neighborhoods and schools. Our support is intended to help identify, activate, inform and network leaders. And finally, we believe when schools and neighborhoods team up to improve their school and community, meaningful and lasting change can be made. We are interested in funding proposals in which the students and adults in schools collaborate intentionally with community residents, neighborhood associations, and other individuals, groups, and institutions in the area surrounding a school.

School Leadership

We believe that attracting and retaining effective and diverse school leaders is a key lever for change in Baltimore’s educational landscape, and so we fund school leadership development efforts at the district and individual school level. We are interested in funding proposals that focus on principal coaching, mentoring, peer networking, wellness/self-care, as well as pipelines that identify and develop new leaders. We will also continue to support efforts that build a culture of appreciation and encouragement for school leaders.

Place-based Grantmaking in Selected School Communities

We have allocated funds for two geographical areas that bookend a crucial corridor on the Westside of Baltimore City: Howard Park /Forest Park area (served by Calvin Rodwell Elementary Middle School and Liberty Elementary), and Reservoir Hill/Penn North area (served by Dorothy I Height Elementary). In these three schools and their surrounding neighborhoods, we will support projects and activities designed to make the communities safe, clean, green and vibrant; and improve the quality of the schools. Some projects may be neighborhood-focused, some school-focused and others collaborative projects between the schools and their respective communities.

Early Learning & Judy Centers

High quality early childhood education has a lifelong effect on students. Through our Early Learning grant program, we are interested in system-wide early childhood education proposals that will help Baltimore City and County’s youngest learners, and their families, get the start they need. Nonprofit organizations that offer programs and/or services to Judy Centers are encouraged to contact the centers directly to explore partnership opportunities.
