Judy Center at John Ruhrah recognized as Model Judy Center by State Education Department

January 27, 2017

BCF just received great news. The Judy Center at John Ruhrah Elementary, one of the Judy Centers funded through a $6 million campaign at BCF, has been named a model Judy Center by the Maryland State Department of Education. We congratulate the entire Judy Center community for this achievement, and especially the Judy Center at John Ruhrah and its director, Sarah Bollard. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our Judy Center donors.

Sarah shared this note with us about the achievement:

"If you are receiving this email it is because you are a valuable Partner of the Judy Center at John Ruhrah and we wouldn’t be able to do our jobs without your help!  On Wednesday we had our annual Judy Center MSDE (Maryland State Department of Education) site visit.  During this visit they go through all 12 components of what a Judy Center entails and determine if we are fully met in each piece of criteria in each domain.  We met for a few hours with MSDE and discussed our programming and showed them what we have been up to with all of you over the past year.  And…they were very impressed!

Not only did we meet each expectation as a Judy Center in their rubric (which is very difficult to do), but they have given us the great distinction of being a Model Judy Center for the State of Maryland.  There are 51 Judy Centers in the state, so becoming a model Judy Center after only being open a 1 1/2  years is quite difficult to do.  We would not have been able to reach this level of success without such strong partnership and support from you.  During our meeting with MSDE we were able to note that we are currently serving 388 families in the Greektown/Bayview community, steadily working towards Kindergarten readiness for children, by supporting the whole child, the whole family and the greater community with your help.  Without your support we would not be able to have the intensity of services that we have been able to provide thus far in such a short period of time.

We simply love being here in the Greektown/Bayview area and truly appreciate how welcoming you are to each family that you touch and all that you do every day!  I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart and hope you know that you are making a difference in the life of so many people in this neighborhood.  We look forward to continuing to work with you in this southeast section of Baltimore City."
