Chikaodi Nwanegwo Speaks to BCF's Board of Trustees
June 11, 2015
The 2015 BCF Scholarship for Young Civic Leaders has been awarded to Chikaodi Nwanegwo, a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, who will be attending Morgan State University with the help of the $12,000 award.
Nwanegwo is from Baltimore but has lived in Nigeria. During her career at Poly, she was involved in the Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens (MERIT), which aims to eliminate health care disparities by transforming under-represented high school students into health care leaders. During a visit to a Nigerian hospital she found that many health issues facing Nigerians were similar to those facing low-income Baltimoreans, including high rates of sexually transmitted infections and teen pregnancy. As a project in MERIT, she started the Care Using Responsive Education (CURE) Project, which aims to educate Baltimoreans about the affects of preventable diseases and other health-related issues.
