BCF carries out the goals of its Transportation Path primarily through the work of the Central Maryland Transportation Alliance (CMTA), created by BCF to bring together diverse interests and coordinate advocacy efforts toward transformational transportation improvements. CMTA worked hard throughout 2008 to build consensus among residents, labor unions, businesses and developers for the planned Red Line which will connect Woodlawn with Bayview and points in between. With strong community support for the project, the Red Line is now well-positioned for federal funding and a final go-ahead could be gained by the end of 2009. In another effort focusing on the regional rail plan, CMTA analyzed potential locations throughout the region for transit-oriented development, pulling together state and local government agencies in housing, transportation, planning and development, to pool information and create a matrix pinpointing the best locations region-wide for future investments. CMTA continues to work closely with MTA, pushing for improvements in service that will result in more people relying on mass transit as a convenient, affordable alternative to driving. CMTA recently completed the first comprehensive analysis of why people choose to use—or not use—public transportation. Focus groups, surveys and polls gathered input from people around the region. Results will be released throughout this summer and fall – visit www.CMTAlliance.org to find out what people said. As a result of heavy lobbying by CMTA, Baltimore has released an RFP to secure car-sharing service in Baltimore, which would provide an economical alternative for those who can’t afford or don’t need a full-time personal vehicle. BCF invites all who share our vision for this region to join us and Invest in Baltimore. We believe that no one path leads to our common goal, but that by investing strategically in many paths we can create a Baltimore with a growing economy in which all have the opportunity to thrive. BCFs grantmaking is built around these nine paths, one of which is Transportation.
