What a year for our environment path!

As a lead partner in the City’s Initiative for a Cleaner Greener Baltimore, BCF reached out to neighborhoods to get them involved, offering grants for greening projects and supporting increased recycling in a number of ways. Following the City’s switch to single-stream recycling early in 2008, BCF created a revolving loan pool so that neighborhood organizations could purchase recycling bins at cost to get them in the hands of as many residents as possible. BCF has strongly advocated the City’s “1+1” proposal to increase residential recycling pick-ups. The bright yellow recycling bins have become a badge of honor in some neighborhoods, and best of all, recycling has increased by thirty percent, significantly reducing the amount of solid waste in our landfills, saving the City money and ultimately providing a more sustainable quality of life for all.

We lent BCF Director of Community Investment Cheryl Casciani to the cause, freeing more than half of her time to chair the commission charged with writing a sustainability plan for Baltimore. That plan, adopted early in 2009, will guide the City’s decisions on everything from energy conservation at City Hall to making sure all residents have green space near their homes.

Steps toward one goal of the sustainability plan is demonstrated by creation of the Tree Trust Fund at BCF, formed to support the efforts of Tree Baltimore to double the city’s tree canopy within 30 years.

We continue to make grants to support local watershed organizations, counting on them to safeguard the stream valleys which are the arteries of our urban ecosystem.

BCFs Environment Path focuses grants on:

  • Fostering broad community engagement in issues relating to stream valleys, open space and parks;
  • Preserving and protecting open spaces in urban areas;
  • Nurturing local practices that further the objectives of the Chesapeake Bay Agreement;
  • Supporting the involvement of people from all sectors of the community in planning for the Baltimore regions parks and waterways;
  • Encouraging collaboration across sectors to improve the urban environment;
  • Promoting awareness and use of Baltimores parks, bike paths and waterways;
  • Strengthening local environmental organizations.

BCF invites all who share our vision for this region to join us and Invest in Baltimore. We believe that no one path leads to our common goal, but that by investing strategically in many paths we can create a Baltimore with a growing economy in which all have the opportunity to thrive. BCFs grantmaking is built around these nine paths, one of which is Environment.
