The Baltimore Police Mounted Unit, founded in 1888, is the oldest continuous Mounted Unit within the United States.
The unit is mostly deployed in the downtown area both at daytime and at night to help close the local bars. It has been said by police strategists that one mounted officer has the impact of ten police officers. Mounted officers are excellent for community relations, crowd control and crime deterrence.
Unfortunately, due to the economy and budgetary issues, the rich history of the unit is threatened. As of July 1st, 2009, the care of the horses was no longer funded within the police department’s budget. Salaries and benefits for the mounted officers, however, are included in the department budget. If the Mounted Unit is to survive, generous donations from the private sector are needed.
