Police officers often serve as first responders in situations involving mental health. Officers need to know how to identify mental health issues and make decisions about how to help vulnerable people – often in a short amount of time. This month, Future City examines how officials in San Antonio developed mental health crisis response teams within the police department and provided intense training to police officers on how to deal with mental health crises. The goal: to help vulnerable people access mental health services and avoid an unnecessary detainment by the justice system.
