The Hecht-Levi Foundation, one of BCF’s first and most consistent supporters, received the 2016 Outstanding Foundation Award fromthe  American Fundraising Professionals-Maryland Chapter’s during a banquet in celebration of National Philanthropy Day Nov. 9.

Robert and Ryda Levi, who led their foundation for many years, were instrumental in creating BCF, brought together communities around a unified vision for strengthening our city, region and its people.

“The Levi’s wanted to break down barriers and bring equal opportunity to all,” says Tom Wilcox, BCF President & CEO. “They decided to do it through philanthropy and BCF. Bob put it best when he said: “What Baltimore needs is a philanthropic organization that is a gathering of all people—no color line, no religious affiliation, no special cause’ what Baltimore needs is a community foundation.”

The Hecht-Levi Foundation has perpetuated a tradition of strong grant making and civic engagement throughout its existence. It has supported Baltimore's key educational and cultural organizations, and has enhanced the broad work of BCF.

It has supported BCF at every step of its growth -- from a community grant maker to regional convener and advocate for Baltimore. It has made important gifts to BCF as it has grown, including more than $650,000 to support infrastructure and a civic endowment to support our city's changing needs. The permanent charitable funds they created decades ago continue to provide support for the arts and resources to address issues at the core of Baltimore's civic and economic health.

The Hecht-Levi Foundation provides annual support of BCF's Civic Leadership Fund which fuels our work to improve Baltimore. The Hecht-Levi Foundation was the first foundation to commit a $1 million leadership gift to BCF’s successful $100 million Campaign for BCF and Baltimore
