Charles Steward Mott Foundation Honors BCF’s 25 Years of Neighborhood Grants

August 18, 2014

Twenty-five years ago, the Baltimore Community Foundation competed with community foundations nationwide for funding from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to establish a small-grants program for urban neighborhoods. Even after Mott completed its participation as a funder, BCF continued, building an endowment to support neighborhood grants in perpetuity thank to the generosity of the William G. Baker Memorial Fund, Since the inception of the Neighborhood Grants Program, BCF has provided small grants to resident-led groups totaling more than $2.5 million. We believe that residents drive the greatest change in their communities and community projects serve as a hook both to get more residents engaged and to develop leadership within neighborhoods.

From reclaiming a vacant lot, to packaging school supplies for neighborhood students, to developing reading and art clubs, these neighborhood projects can have a huge impact on helping neighborhoods to become and remain safe, clean, green and vibrant.
