Acting as a village

July 08, 2016

“We believe in the Baltimore Community Foundation—in its mission, its leadership, and its vision for Baltimore,” says Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and honorary trustee of BCF. In 2003, he and his wife established the BCF donor-advised Jackie and Freeman Hrabowski Fund, which they converted in 2008 to an unrestricted endowed Fund for Baltimore.

“We’ve come to appreciate the need for permanence in support of children, families, and communities,” he says. “We wanted to establish a fund that will live beyond us for future generations, and we intend to continue to build the fund.”

The Hrabowskis recently increased their commitment to BCF with a $1 million testamentary gift to the Campaign for BCF, which raised over $100 million. “BCF has thought about the needs of the people of this region," they said. "We know that our money invested there will be spent wisely.”

They chose to focus their Campaign commitment on endowment for BCF, because, they said, they recognize that Baltimore needs a strong community foundation, and they want to ensure that BCF is able to fill the role of civic leader not only today, but far into the future.

Hrabowski says their good fortune—his at UMBC and Jackie’s at T. Rowe Price—has enabled them to help others. “It’s important to think about how to help your community,” he says, “and there’s no such thing as giving too much.”

He views their endowed fund as an investment. “Most important, we know that our money invested there will be spent wisely. We all want to see our region thrive, and that can happen only if we act as a village.”

At BCF, we have lots of options for your giving, and we can help you create a plan that fits your unique situation. Learn more about how you can give.
