Education Path Funding Priorities
Public Education
- Support the creation of new and charter schools that foster quality public education. (Schools are eligible for BCF support once they have exhausted public resources.)
- Foster high quality public education, with special attention to programs that:
- Broaden access to courses that are prerequisites for college entry;
- Ensure the systemic teaching of phonics and language development skills;
- Offer access to computer technology.
(Strong preference will be given to projects with the potential to be implemented at multiple sites or effect systemic change.)
- Fund efforts to ensure identification of and access to appropriate, quality educational options for special populations including gifted and talented children and youth, and those with disabilities.
Adult Education and Family Literacy
- Encourage family literacy initiatives that include interactive reading, home visiting programs, and access to books for families, and promote literacy efforts that recognize and address the family as a unit.
- Fund adult literacy programs, specifically but not limited to adult basic education and GED programs.
Advocacy and Civic Engagement
- Support efforts to organize students, parents, and community members to advocate for school reforms and new school creation.
- Fund advocacy efforts to increase public funding for school readiness programs, public and private education, and support judicial and legislative remedies for under-funding of the public schools.
Note: In addition to the funding strategies of the Education Path, BCF is also committed to providing tuition assistance to students through its scholarship funds for K-12 and higher education.
