Terms and Definitions

Endowment
A permanent fund that will generate income for grantmaking in perpetuity.

Donor-advised fund
A tax-advantaged, convenient alternative to a family foundation, a great way to organize personal or family philanthropy or a corporate giving program.

Invest in Baltimore fund
A permanent fund supporting all of BCF's broad civic agenda, or any one of the nine paths of Invest in Baltimore, in perpetuity.

Organizational endowment
A permanent fund managed by BCF, with the income benefiting a specific organization.

Charter foundation
Operates much like private foundations, with professional grantmaking support, administration, and filing of reports all provided by BCF.

Giving circle
A pooled grantmaking fund, whose members combine their contributions and decide jointly on distributions to charities.

Charitable gift annuity          
A giving instrument that provides you with income for life as well as a major charitable gift - all with tax benefits.

Bequest
A gift provided for in your will. See sample bequest language.
